LEYTE

February 20, 2006

What can you say about disasters. ..That they strike us without notice. The sad thing with the Leyte incident is that this is the second time that it happened in the same province. The worst probably was the first but the loss of human lives is something that is very hard to accept.

What do we do–people who like us are far away from our country and who look at these incidents somehow callously like as if it has happened somewhere else ?I cannot say that Leyte officials did not know that a disaster was forthcoming, nobody knows really. I just hope and pray that no other disaster will strike the Philippines again (if that could be helped).

You see in Singapore, a country that is so small, there are no disasters, no earthquake, no typhoon, no tidal wave —NOTHING (NADA).They have thuderstorms though. That the mere falling of a cat in the roof is already a major disaster(just joking). If ever there is a disaster, we count fatalities in tens not even hundreds and normally it happens out of Singapore when Singaporeans are on holiday going somewhere else like Australia or Africa(know what I mean, they meet accidents only when they go on tour).

But in the Philippines, even when you are already staying at home, suddenly disaster strikes. WHo can imagine aeroplanes landing on your house(like those on nearby Merville Subdivision) or  your house being swept away by mud. What more if your house is below the bridge (ilalim ng tulay). Lets Just pray for everyone!

GOOD DAY MAID

February 19, 2006

Today is Sunday and I am working in the office waiting for my clients to arrive. At 1:30 I am waiting for this Indian lady married to an expat. She is looking for an Indonesian maid to take care of her 4 year old daughter. Two Indonesian girls are coming for interview.Today , Filipino maids go out for their day off.

Its funny why FIlipino maids want to work only for white employers and not for local ones(you know Indians, SIngaporeans ,Malay). May discrimination na rin sila. Maids who specially had worked in Singapore for even a few months would prefer white maski na kamukha ni Redford White, basta puti ang gusto nila.

If you are planning to work in SIngapore and you are bringing your kids, its best that you already look for a good maid in the Philippines to bring here because you will not find one who will last with you kung hindi mo sila kilala. The favorite past time of maids in Singapore are strolling in Orchard road, chatting with other maids in Lucky Plaza or at Gulong Park(near the Orchard MRT) and going to mass(funny why they consider this a past time).

They come in all shapes and sizes. Every Sunday, you see them wearing the skimpiest of clothes which they can never wear in the Philippines or in the homes of their employers. Some enterprising ones sell things to other maids on their day off, some do part time work(cleaning other peoples houses which is prohibited here) and some go to discos with Myanmar, Bangla Deshi or Indian men.

You hear all kinds of stories about their employers, all sorts of complaints and very few would sing praises about their bosses. I believe its because they are home sick and lack the affection of theirloved ones. So its not uncommon to hear of maids even those who are married to have Indian,Bangladeshi or Indian Boy friends.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA!!!

Tomorrow, February 20 is my Mothers birthday. I love u mother and we miss you very much . Below was the last photo we had together as a family (Dec 2003)

(Mama passed away on June 20 after celebrating with my father their 49th wedding anniversary (June 11), Papa’s bday(June 16) and father’s day (June 19)

(Lyrics of Iingatan ka..from TANGING INA)

Sa buhay kong ito tanging pangarap lang
Ang ‘yong pagmamahal ay makamtan
Kahit na sandali kita ay mamasdan
Ligaya’y tila ba walang hanggan

THE DESIGN OF MY BLOG SPACE

February 18, 2006

whAT IS A BLOG? For those who are neophytes like me it is best to know the meaning - A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links

A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

What is the reason for the design of my blogsite. I like the color of green.Green Leaves signify freshness and life. However from time to time I will update the design of my website. Change is a given, life continues……

BLOGGING IS FUN

I have always wanted to blog, first because I want to show my friends and family my daily thoughts.

Another is because it is something new for me. Surfing yesterday night looking for long lost college friends , i stumbled on this website, www.i.ph.com. It is absolutely free. If I become an expert at this I will teach Nygel my eldest son to do his own website.

GOOD DEALS

[I am still trying to download all our photos. So here are some of my first tips:

1) Want to know how to get a S$62 round trip ticket to Bangkok?

2) Want to know where to buy a 20 inch LCD TV at S$888?

3) Want to go to HK Disneyland at less than S$400 including stay at KH Disneyland Hotel?

OK, we did, just all the above, HOW:

1) When buying air tickets, it doesnt hurt if you regularly surf budget airline sites such as airasia.com, jetstarasia.com and tigerairways.com. The cheapest tickets that I had purchased for my family was a S$62 Singapore-BK rnd trip from AirAsia. I bought in January but our trip is six months away.

2) the Big (Safe) store opened today at Harbourfront Shopping Centre(where u take ferry rides to batam). LCD 20 TVs are selling cheap the lowest is at S$670. We bought a Hitachi 20" TV set at $888.

3) We took a TigerAirways trip to Macau in October 2005 and took a Hydrofoil ride to HK which just cost us less than S$200 each(air and ferry tickets). The unbargainables are the HK Disneyland Hotel daily rate of S$250/day accomodation and HK Disneyland entry tickets costing almost the same S$250 for 4 persons. However if u want adventure, do your own trip planning and save money.

4) These are the websites to check for good airline ticket bargains:

www.airfares.com.sg (search for international plane tickets at promo rates)

www.get2know.com.sg (Zuji.com.sg website)

www.jetstarasia.com (arrely has promos, price is a little higher vs a vs tiger airways)

www.tigerairways.com (cheap travel but beware of flight cancellations- no refund is given)

www.airasia.com (cheap when they have promos but u must make reservations fast)

5) For good hotel deals:

www.farangs.com (The cheapest website to search for hotel rates)

www.asiahotels.com

www.marimari.com (for cheap hotels in Malaysia and elsewhere in Asia)

www.genting.com.my  (for cheap hotels starting at $3 ,Unbelievable ? Its true . In May 2005 we stayed overnight on a weekday for this amount at First World Hotel
